United Nations: Italy will be reviewed at the 56th session of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Geneva, 21st September – 9th October

The 56th session of the UN Committee for economic, social and cultural rights will be held in Geneva from 21st September to 9th October. This body is composed by 18 independent experts, in charge of monitoring the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1966) in 164 States parties.

In the 56th session, the UN Committee will review the reports of the following countries: Burundi, Greece, Italy, Guyana, Iraq, Morocco, Sudan.

Italy’s fifth report will be reviewed on 25th September. The forth one was examined by the UN Committee in December 2004. The following relevant NGOs presented shadow reports: Amnesty International, European Roma Rights Centre, Housing and Land Rights Network, International Baby Food Action Network, Italian Disability Forum, Associazione 21 Luglio, Triest NGO, Comitato per la Promozione e Protezione dei Diritti Umani, Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children, Human Rights and Tobacco Control Network.

Italy ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in 1978 and the Optional Protocol in 2015.
