A Perfect Equation between the Caritas in Veritate and the Principle of Responsible Compossibility?

Achille Agnati

The principle of responsible compossibility (2001) states: «Two or more realities live according to responsible compossibility if – from a logical point of view (Leibniz’s logic) – they are simultaneously compatible and, at the same time, if – from an ethical point of view (Jonas’ ethics) – they do not harm their own and others’ survival». Reading the Caritas in Veritate (2009) one paragraph at a time (1-79), we have assessed the economic, social and political references of its statements, reminding particularly valuables authors and works from the scientific and philosophical literature of political economics, or indirectly reversed in it, and always searching for the possible confirm to the rhetorical question characterising this article’s title, i.e. whether a perfect  equation between the Caritas in Veritate and the principle of responsible compossibility actually exists. It is a rhetorical question, since the answer – after concluding the evaluative research – is affirmative: the existence of a perfect equation between the Caritas in Veritate and the principle of responsible compossibility has been confirmed. More exactly, out of the 79 paragraphs constituting the encyclical, 62 paragraphs show a perfect equation and 17 an almostperfect equation. The Caritas in Veritate appears as an operatively explicative follow-up of the responsible compossibility principle!
