E.MA - European Master

Students of the European Master "Human Rights and Democratisation"

The European Master in Human Rights and Democratization, created in 1997 on the initiative of the Human Rights Center of the University of Padua, the European Commission, and nine other European universities, is one of the regional masters on human rights offered by the Global Campus of Human Rights (GC), the most important and qualified global platform of post-graduate human rights education. More than one hundred universities and research centres from all continents compose the Global Campus, that supports seven more regional masters in human rights democratisation in Africa, Latin America Caribbean, Caucasus, Arab World, Asia Pacific, Central Asia, and South-East Europe.

The European Master (EMA) lasts one year. In  the first semester (September – January) classes take place at the monastery of San Nicolò, in Venice Lido; at the end, a field trip is scheduled for all students (in tha last years, the field mission has been organized in Kosovo). In  the second semester (February – July) students, divided into small groups, can attend courses, conduct research and write their thesis in one of the 41 European universities of the EMA network.

A university degree (bachelor's or master's degree) of a high standard in a field relevant to human rights, including legal, social and humanistic disciplines, is required for access, as well as the necessary language skills; previous operational experience, local or international, in the field of human rights is also taken into account. The EMA diploma is jointly issued by seven European universities in Italy, Germany, Austria and Slovenia. It can be a master's degree, if the student had previously held at least 240 ECTS credits, or another postgraduate degree (for example, "first-level master's certificate", in Italy).

The European Master is organized by the Global Campus of Human Rights, which has a small but highly qualified team of scholars and teaching fellows who coordinate the EMA faculty. The top quality of teaching is guaranteed by the seven Universities that issue the joint degree (Padua, Venice Ca' Foscari, Bochum, Hamburg, Graz and Ljubljana), as well as by all the other Universities of the European Global Campus network, which make their best experts available as teachers and thesis supervisors. The program is supported by the European Union and the Right Livelihood Foundation. The Veneto Region, the City of Venice, the United Nations High CommissioThe European Union and the Right Livelihood Foundation support the programner for Human Rights, UNESCO, as well as the EU and various other international organizations and NGOs, are partners in the program and offer internship opportunities to the best graduates.
