Padova Model UPR

The Department of Political Science, Law and International Studies and the Master’s Degree Programme in Human Rights and Multi-level Governance, jointly with the Human Rights Centre “Antonio Papisca” at the University of Padova, have promoted and organized the Padova Model UPR, a UN Model (MUN), since 2018.
The Padova Model UPR is an academic simulation of the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism. The UPR is a unique process of the UN Human Rights Council through which the human rights situation of each UN Member State is reviewed in a peer-to-peer setting approximately every four and a half years.
During the Model UPR, participants take on the role of delegates, representing the interests of a Member State, of a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) or of a National Human Rights Institution (NHRI). The entire simulation is conducted in English and faithfully replicates the procedural and diplomatic dynamics of the UPR as they take place in Geneva. Through a series of online training sessions, structured group work, the drafting of official documents, and on-site interactive debates and multilateral dialogues, participants gain in-depth knowledge of the UN system, enhance their research and analytical skills in politics and international law, and develop their public speaking and negotiation abilities.
The Padova Model UPR features the participation of UN officials and experts, offering students a valuable opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with professionals working daily in the field of international human rights protection.
The Padova Model UPR is also a unique opportunity to interact with students from different countries, exchange ideas and perspectives, and discuss real global challenges in the field of human rights. It is an exceptional experience for those who wish to explore the world of international relations and pursue a career with the United Nations, NGOs, or in diplomacy.
