The United Nations has announced a new phase of the UN80 Initiative, a reform process launched by Secretary-General António Guterres to strengthen the organisation’s capacity to respond to the complex challenges facing the international community, on 28 May 2026. Introduced at the United Nations’ 80th anniversary, the initiative aims to ensure the organisation remains effective, efficient, and able to fulfil its mandate in a rapidly changing world marked by armed conflicts, climate change, economic uncertainty, and increasing geopolitical tensions.

According to the Secretary-General, the initiative aims to improve coordination across the UN system, enhance institutional effectiveness and ensure the sustainable use of available resources, while preserving the principles and values enshrined in the UN Charter. The reform process is based on the recognition that many of today’s challenges transcend national borders and require collective responses. Climate change, forced displacement, persistent inequalities, humanitarian crises and emerging technologies are among the issues that demand stronger international cooperation and more effective multilateral institutions.

The initiative also reviews current structures and processes to reduce duplication, improve coordination, and direct resources to priority areas. Particular attention is devoted to strengthening transparency, accountability and public trust in international institutions. According to the United Nations, these reforms are not limited to administrative considerations but are intended to enhance the Organisation’s ability to support populations affected by crises and contribute more effectively to the implementation of international commitments related to peace, sustainable development and human rights.

The launch of this new phase of the UN80 Initiative comes at a time when the multilateral system is facing significant pressures. Growing geopolitical divisions, financial constraints and challenges to international cooperation continue to test the capacity of global institutions to respond to common problems. In this context, the United Nations has stressed that strengthening multilateralism remains essential to addressing shared global challenges and promoting international solidarity.

The UN80 Initiative therefore represents an important opportunity to reflect on the future of global governance and on the role of international institutions in fostering peace, protecting human rights and advancing sustainable development. By seeking to make the United Nations more responsive, efficient and fit for purpose, the initiative aims to reinforce the Organisation’s capacity to serve present and future generations in an increasingly interconnected world.
