Scuola Normale Superiore: Registration Open for the Summer School “War, Peace and the World Order”, Florence, 29th September - 3rd October

The Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa is now accepting registrations for the Summer School “War, Peace and the World Order”, to be held in Florence from September 29 to October 3, 2025. This intensive 5-day course, organized in collaboration with the National PhD Program in Peace Studies and RUNIPACE, will take an interdisciplinary approach to examine the causes, dynamics, and effects of contemporary wars, exploring strategies for peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and resolution. The initiative, part of the MERITA project funded by the PNRR, is aimed at master's and PhD students, researchers, NGO workers, international organizations, activists, and policymakers.
The program includes lectures and discussions led by various experts, including Francesca Albanese (online), Lazslo Andor (to be confirmed), Mats Berdal, Paola Caridi, Raul Caruso, Luciana Castellina, Futura D'Aprile, Donatella della Porta, Matthew Evangelista, Anna Foa (to be confirmed), Mauro Garofalo, Dario Guarascio, Volodymyr Ishchenko, Mario Pianta, Luca Raineri, Francesco Strazzari, Dan Smith (to be confirmed), Guglielmo Tamburrini, and Francesco Vignarca. Topics covered include: the world system, modern armed conflicts, international law, military economics, digital technologies and artificial intelligence in warfare, peace movements, and peacebuilding strategies. Special attention will be given to case studies such as the war in Ukraine and the Israeli-Palestinian occupation.
Registration is open until August 10, 2025, and participation is free. The course, which will be held in English with a final session in Italian, has a maximum capacity of 50 participants. Students will be required to complete preparatory readings, actively participate in discussions, and produce a short final essay. A certificate of attendance will be provided, and PhD students may have the opportunity to earn credits.
