18 March 2010: hearing at European Parliament for the accession of the European Union to the European Convention on Human Rights

On 18 of March, the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels hosted the hearing “The institutional aspects of the European Union accession to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR)”.

Delegates from the European Union and from the Council of Europe partecipated in the event, as well as representatives of national parliaments and international experts on Human Rights and Communitarian Law.

On behalf of the Human Rights Centre of the University of Padua, Professor Papisca, UNESCO Chair in “human rights, democracy an peace”, contributed to the hearing.

The European Union accession to the Convention is provided for in Article 6 of the Lisbon Treaty and in Article 17,1 of the 14th Protocol to ECHR, which amends the control system of the Convention. Following the Russian ratification on February 2010, the Protocol, adopted in 2004, will enter in force on 1 June 2010.
