International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 25 November 2024
25 November has been declared by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Violence against women is one of the most widespread and deep-rooted human rights violations in the world and remains largely unreported to date due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame that surround it. Almost one in three women has been abused in her lifetime.
Femicide refers to gender-related killings. It is a universal problem and the most brutal, visible and extreme manifestation of the continuum of gender-based violence that women and girls suffer. In 2023, for at least 51,100 women, violence culminated in their murder by partners and family members. Worldwide, a woman is murdered every 10 minutes.
The 2024 campaign is dedicated to them: Every 10 minutes a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women.
Every year, on 25 November, the international campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is launched and continues until 10 December (World Human Rights Day).
