United Nations: International Human Rights Day, 10 December 2025

Every 10 December, Human Rights Day is observed around the world, commemorating the proclamation on the 10 December 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR, the most translated document in the world, is a landmark document enshrining inalienable rights that every person is entitled to as a human being, without discrimination. The UDHR represents “a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations” and a foundation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

In view of the International Human Rights Day 2025, the United Nations have launched the campaign “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials”. The aim is to re-engage people with human rights, in times of unpredictability and insecurity. The campaign wants to show world citizens the importance that human rights have and the role they play in everyday life. Considering that human rights tend to be taken for granted or seen as abstract concepts, this campaign wishes to underline that human rights are positive, essential and attainable.

We must reconnect with human rights, remembering that they are about people – about their needs, wants and fears, as well as their hopes and aspirations - Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

On this day, the Human Rights Centre and the UNESCO Chair “Human Rights, Democracy and Peace”, together with the municipalities of Padova, Vicenza and Camponogara, the PerugiAssisi Foundation for the Culture of Peace, the National Network of Schools of Peace, the National Coordination of Local Authorities for Peace and Human Rights, Network of Italian Universities for Peace, Veneto Region Peace and Human Rights Archive, Lions Club Tito Livio Padova, organises the national conference “Giornata internazionale dei Diritti Umani 2025: Sbellichiamoci e ricostruiamo l'amore politico per la pace e la fraternità”, which aims to bring at the centre political love for peace and fraternity.
