The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights (BIM) was established in 1992 as an independent research centre with the aim of contributing to the scientific discourse of human rights at the national, European and global level. The Centre carries out multidimensional and interdisciplinary research, based on a holistic approach covering civil, political, economic, social, cultural and collective human rights. The Centre's research methods are dedicated to the principles of human rights: based on empowerment, equality of all human beings and the participation of all parties concerned. The results of research establish the basis for the Centre's work in the fields of counselling, implementation, monitoring, education and university teaching.

The Chair was established in 2008 as a result of the agreement between the UNESCO and the University of Innsbruck within which it works. Its main objective is to promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation in the field of human rights. One of the key elements of the Chair is the MA Program for Peace Studies. It also pays big attention to the exchange of professors, researchers and students with other universities. In his academic orientation UNESCO Chair for Peace Studies follows the principles of Manifesto 2000 which encourage to change the culture of war and violence into a culture of peace and non-violence.
