The Chair was established in 1999 to work in the field of Education for Pluralism, Human Rights and Democracy. Building on from the work of the Chair, the UNESCO Centre was founded in 2001 and has, for the past ten years, engaged in research, development and teaching in the areas of: Children and Youth, Education and Conflict, International Development. The UNESCO Centre at the University of Ulster aims to provide research on children and young people, education and conflict and international development that impacts debate locally and globally, contributing to a greater determination to enshrine the principles of education for Pluralism, Human Rights and Democracy around the world.

The Transitional Justice Institute (TJI) was established in 2013 to build a theoretical and practical understanding of the role of 'transitional justice', and the underlying relationship between justice and peace; to examine the role of the international and domestic legal systems and institutions in facilitating transition from conflict; to make links between the experience of Northern Ireland and international experience, so as to benefit both Northern Ireland and other contexts;to inform policy makers involved in peacemaking in local and international institutions; and to make visible and critically examine gendered experiences of transition.
The Institute is the member of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI).

The Consortium was established to facilitate and promote research in the field of human rights byinter aliaorganising and supporting academic events on human rights, fostering national and international networks of human rights academics, enhancing the teaching and learning environment for graduate students, and raising funds in support of human rights research and research support. The Institute was established in 2003 to deal with research, policy analysis, training, teaching and consultancy in the field of human rights.
