Course on "Sport and human rights in the European Union law" at the University of Padua within the Jean Monnet Program of the European Commission

Sport and physical education are excellent means to promote education, health and environmental protection, development and peace, as well as social values such as team spirit, fair competition, cooperation, solidarity, human rights. Sports initiatives could be means to combat the social exclusion, violence, inequality, racism and xenophobia. International organizations such as the UN, UNESCO, the European Union, the Council of Europe adopted a number of declarations on the role of sport for the promotion of internationally recognized human rights.

The course "Sport and human rights in EU law" (6 ECTS) is based on the study of the relationship between the rights of individuals, athletes or not, and the rules of the sport in its European and international dimension. The course - now in the fifth year of operation - will deal, among others, with the following topics: national and international anti-doping legislation in sport, sport and economic rights, sports and discrimination, protection of athlete  women, athlete's health protection, child protection in European law of sport, exploitation of child labor, the Olympic Truce and the right to peace (detailed program of the course on the  site of the former  Faculty of Political Science).

The course is addressing to students of the Master Degree in "Institutions and policies for human rights and peace" and to students from other Master degrees in the Department of Political Science, Law and International Studies.

Students who pass the exam receive a “Jean Monnet Certificate."

The Course is held by prof. Jacopo Tognon, holder of the Jean Monnet European Module, Italian member of the Tribunal Arbitral du Sport in Lausanne.

Students who are interested are asked to send an email to the professor (jacopo.tognon@unipd.it) by 15 March 2013.

Classes will be held in the second semester starting from 18 March 2013 and will be held on Monday and Tuesday from 12.30 to 14.30 in classroom to be nominated.
