OHCHR: Türk decries government crackdown in Bangladesh and urges respect for international human rights standards

UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk urged the Bangladesh Government to disclose details about last week's crackdown on protests. Reports indicate that over 170 people were killed, over a thousand injured, and many are missing following protests by students and youth movements. At least two journalists were killed, and hundreds were arrested.

Türk expressed concern over attacks on people by groups reportedly affiliated with the Government, with no effort made to protect them. He urged the Government to ensure law enforcement operations align with international human rights norms and standards, particularly regarding the policing of protests.

Türk called for the restoration of full Internet access, offering his Office’s support for an impartial, independent, and transparent investigation into all alleged human rights violations. He urged authorities to provide guarantees of non-recurrence and assurance there would be no reprisals against those involved in the protests.

Türk hoped the Supreme Court's decision to narrow the quota system for government jobs may open space for confidence-building and lead to meaningful and inclusive dialogue to address underlying issues and grievances. He appealed to all political actors to avoid any statements or actions that could constitute incitement to violence or lead to a further crackdown on dissent.
