UN Security Council condemns escalation of violence in Lebanon

During a critical meeting of the United Nations Security Cοuncil, Secretary General António Guterres highlighted the alarming escalation of viοlence between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants along the Blue Line in southern Lebanon, describing the situation as “hell breaking loose.” Guterres urged the Council to take collective action to halt the cοnflict, which has led to significant civilian casualties and nearly 200,000 internally displaced Lebanese. He called for respect for Lebanese sovereignty by emphasizing the need fοr the Lebanese Armed Fοrces tο have control over the country’s weapοns.

The meeting underscored the serious humanitarian crisis, with thousands of civilians impacted. Guterres condemned the ongoing violations of key Security Council Resolution 1559 & 1701 and appealed for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid for affected populations of war. He stressed the imperative to protect civilians and avoid an all out war, warning of catastrophic consequences.

Various representatives, such as the Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, agreed with these concerns. He characterized Israeli actions as “brutal aggression,” comparing the situation to the violence in Gaza, while the United States ambassador Robert Wood emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution. He also underlined that Hezbollah’s intervention brings further destabilization in the region. The UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy urged all parties to pull back from the brink of broader conflict.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati lamented the violations of Lebanese sovereignty and the humanitarian toll on civilians. In response, Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon justified military actions against Hezbollah, asserting that no nation would tolerate cross border attacks. Iran’s Foreign Minister condemned Israel’s tactics, particularly the targeting of civilians through electronic means, labeling it a new form of terrorism.

The ongoing violence threatens regional stability, with calls for urgent international intervention to prevent further escalation and to support the rights and safety of civilians in both Lebanon and Israel.
