Italy: VI Report on the reception and sheltering of unaccompanied foreign minors in Italian municipalities

On 27 July 2016 the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) and Foundation Cittalia presented their VI Report on the reception and sheltering of unaccompanied foreign minors in Italian municipalities. The survey reviews the 2004-2014 decade and involves 56% of the Italian municipalities, corresponding to 73% of the Italian population in 2014. The Report shows a constant increase in the reception of unaccompanied foreign minors since 2011.

According to the data collected by ANCI, more than 13.000 unaccompanied foreign minors were received in 2014. 68.2% of them were sheltered through the social service system, with a significant increase in percentage compared to previous years. More than a half of the unaccompanied foreign minors who entered Italy in 2014 came from Egypt, Bangladesh, Gambia and Albania. As for the municipalities engaged in their reception and sheltering, Rome emerges as the most active city, followed by Reggio Calabria and Palermo. The total percentage of the actively engaged municipalities is 24,2%. Eventually, the Report underlines a constant and esponential increase in the amount of minors sheltered or contacted by social services since 2011.

ANCI is an Association of Italian municipalities to which more than 7.300 towns and cities adhered, representing around 90% of the national population. Cittalia is a foundation created by ANCI to carry out research activities in areas of common interest for Italian municipalities.
