Yemen: Recent progress overshadowed by fallout from attacks on Gaza, UN envoy reports

The UN Special Envoy on Yemen, Hans Grundberg, highlighted the deepening complexity of the Yemen crisis amid reverberations from the Gaza attacks and Red Sea escalation. Despite ongoing mediation efforts and persistent challenges, he stressed the necessity of preserving political dialogue.

Yemen's civil war, triggered by Houthi rebels' overthrow in 2014, has caused widespread suffering, including displacement, food shortages, and a cholera outbreak. Urgent humanitarian aid is imperative. 

The conflict's regional ramifications underscore the need for a concerted effort towards de-escalation and peace, emphasizing Yemenis' right to a future free from war and deprivation. Additionally, the Director of Operations at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, with millions requiring assistance. Lack of basic services, rampant poverty, and healthcare system strain exacerbate the crisis, compounded by Red Sea hostilities hindering aid delivery. 

Urgent international support is vital to address the escalating humanitarian catastrophe, with a $2.7 billion UN appeal crucial for delivering life-saving aid. The collective response must prioritize alleviating suffering, supporting peace efforts, and ensuring Yemenis' access to essential services for a sustainable path forward.
