Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence are awarded by the European Union as part of a world-wide network of currently 130 selected institutions, specialising in European integration studies. They pool the scientific, human and documentary resources to European integration studies available at the higher education institution. They are financed by the Jean Monnet Programme as part of the lifelong learning programme of the EU.
They are intended to stimulate and support inter-disciplinary research on the EU, teaching and learning about 'European integration' in universities and other higher education establishments, and to provide a resource of expertise and advice on contemporary policy issues.
Priority goes to projects which involve academic activities which exploit multi-disciplinary resources; demonstrate openness to civil society, involve researchers preparing a doctorate or having less than 5 years of post-doctoral experience and involve the creation of joint transnational activities and structural links with academic institutions in other countries.
