On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the Human Rights Centre “A. Papisca” of the University of Padova co-organised an event to celebrate the Human Rights Day 2018, which took place in Aula Magna “Galileo Galilei" of Palazzo Bo.
A lot of students, teachers, local administrators, civil society organisations, volunteers were present.
Several mayors of Padova and its municipalities intervened, some of which have recently approved a resolution supporting the project “Shelter Cities” protecting human rights defenders. Many students representing 12 schools of Padova contributed with art, music and poetry, to the Human Rights Day. Students of the Bachelor in Political Science, international relations and human right and students of the Master Degree in Human Rights and Multi-level Governance, participated, intervened, helped the organisation of the event.
Many civil society organisations were involved, among which associations for peace, inclusion, children, prisoners, migrants, women.
The Day was enriched by the scratch art of the live drawer Vittorio Bustaffa, the music of Erica Boschiero, Coro Corollario, and the reading of the actors Lorezno Maragoni and Andrea Pennacchi.
The values and principles set out in the the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have been commented. As the Preambles says, the Declaration is a “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedom" [...].
The purpose of the event was to invite everyone to stand up for human rights from the city up to the United Nations, because there are no rights without responsibilities and there are no rights without institutions and communities able to defend them.
All students were invited to dress the human rights compass, the symbol chosen for this initiative, which is a metaphor to say that the 4 directions of this compass - human rights, dignity, freedom and equality - should be the North Star in everyone’s life.
As prof. Marco Mascia recalled: “human rights are inherent, thus inviolable and inalienable. They are inherent to the human dignity. [...] Human rights, all of them, civil and political, economical, social and cultural, are interdependent and indivisible. [...] After 70 years, human rights tackle the political agenda since they are bearers of the name of the essential needs of every person. Human rights are what their practical implementation is. There is no peace without rights and there are no rights without responsibilities".
