E.MA - European Master
The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA), created in 1997 on the initiative of the Human Rights Centre of University of Padova and promoted directly by European Union, is the most important and qualified post-degree education programme in the field of human rights.
The course lasts one year. In the first semester (September - January), courses are held at the San Nicolò monastery on the Venice Lido; at the end there is a week of field training (in past years the field mission was organized in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo). In the second semester (February - July) students, divided into small groups, can attend courses, conduct research and write their theses in one of the 43 European universities that are members of the network of the European inter-university center for human rights and democratization - EIUC.
Admission requires a high-level university degree in a field relevant to human rights, including legal, social and humanities disciplines, with a minimum of 180 ECTS, in addition to the necessary language skills; previous operational experience, local or international, in the field of human rights is given special consideration.
The European Master's Degree, administered by EIUC, is supported by the European Union, the Veneto Region and the City of Venice, The Right Livelihood Foundation, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNESCO, and the German cooperation NGO GTZ.
