A shot of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) found last week, photographed at the Air Safety Unit of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, held a briefing today showing the CVR, and said that nothing heard so far on the tape links that CVR to the aircraft crash of 6 April 1994 in Rwanda. The Office of Internal Oversight Services took the CVR to the United States National Transportation Safety Board in Washington, D.C., where it was opened in the presence of experts from the International Civil Aviation Organization. Killed in the 1994 plane crash were Juvenal Habyarimana, President of Rwanda, and Cyprian Ntayamira, President of Burundi. Their deaths set off a chain of killings and massacres throughout Rwanda that year, with the death toll from the genocide mounting to more than 800,000 people, mostly minority Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
