United Nations: Rights experts call for probe into alleged violations against Palestinian women and girls

According to the latest statements from United Nations special rapporteurs Reem Alsalem and Francesca Albanese, numerous human rights violations against Palestinian women and girls have been committed in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, by the Israeli army or affiliated forces.

In particular, arbitrary executions of Palestinian women and children occurred during attempts to flee or seek refuge. The use of force against unarmed individuals, and instances where victims were killed while holding pieces of white fabric as a sign of surrender, raise serious questions about the proportionality and legality of ongoing military actions in the region.

Furthermore, arbitrary detentions of hundreds of Palestinian women and girls, including human rights activists, journalists, and humanitarian workers, have been reported. These detentions have been characterized by inhumane and degrading treatment, including deprivation of food, medicine, and feminine hygiene products. There have also been reports of women being held in outdoor cages in the rain and cold without food, a treatment that blatantly violates fundamental principles of human rights and human dignity.

Particularly disturbing is the accusation of sexual assaults against detained women, including sexual violence and threats of rape. These actions not only constitute a violation of fundamental human rights but also a serious form of gender-based violence that must be urgently and decisively addressed.

Concerns have been raised about individuals disappearing after contact with the Israeli army, including women and children. The use of force and arbitrary detention must be condemned and investigated impartially and swiftly, to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions.

Human rights experts have called for an independent, impartial, rapid, thorough, and effective investigation into the allegations and have urged Israel to cooperate with any investigation, reiterating the importance of respecting the right to life, security, health, and dignity of Palestinian women and girls. If confirmed, these violations could constitute serious breaches of international law and crimes under the Rome Statute, paving the way for possible legal actions before the International Criminal Court.
