Abandoned migrant boats lie lifeless opposite the port of Lampedusa, Italy, an island which experiences frequent migration from nearby North Africa. Boats like this one are dumped on wasteland once they are recovered by the Italian Coast Guard.

The 4th edition of the Handbook on European law relating to asylum, borders and immigration was updated to June 2026 by the Fundamental Rights Agency for the European Union.

This new edition provides an accessible overview of the current European legal standards regarding asylum, borders and immigration, and presents the key legal developments since the previous edition (2020), while considering the major changes that have occurred on the European legal landscape, including the 2024 EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. This edition also contains the legislation and body of case law of the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union, alongside a new chapter dedicated to monitoring compliance with fundamental rights and investigations into rights violations.

Since the first edition of the Handbook in 2011, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Human Rights, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights have published handbooks regarding different fields of European law. The handbook is aimed at providing accessible information to lawyers, judges, prosecutors, border guards, immigration officials, national human rights institutions, NGOs and others.
