In response to the need to empower cities and civil society to defend democracy, protect EU values and build a sustainable future, the Human Rights Cities Network in partnership with the Global Parliament of Mayors within the DeCiDE Project, has launched the "Boosting democratic participation in cities to recharge democracy in Europe” project, pivotal in co/creating, piloting and standardizing a unique monitoring system supporting the development of human rights in 8 European cities (Benalmadena, Braga, Chisinau, Ghent, Joszevfaros, Krakow, Padova, and The Hague). Through this initiative, the cities listed now possess a monitoring tool supporting their implementation of human rights and EU values at the local level.
On May 19, 2026 from 3 pm to 5.30 pm, the launch event “Human Rights Cities Compendium of Best Practices in Monitoring” for the Human Rights Cities Compendium of Best Practices for a Standardized Monitoring System will take place.
The event aims to encourage local authorities and civil societies to reflect on the ways in which they can implement a Standardized Monitoring System at the local level.
The session will focus on:
- Why it is important for cities to monitor Human Rights at the local level
- How the DeCiDE Human Rights Cities have implemented and can implement the SMS locally
- The role CSOs can play in advancing democratic participation and monitoring Human Rights at the local level
- How the SMS can be used as a roadmap to improve human rights implementation and policies at the local level
The event is open to: local government officials, European Union representatives, anti-discrimination bodies, and civil society organizations are essential actors in addressing structural inequality and building inclusive cities. Their experience and insights are critical to shaping effective local monitoring systems and advancing collaborative, community-informed solutions.
