International Day of Peace, September 21, 2025

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, the International Day of Peace is celebrated every 21 September. In a period of uncertainty, this year's International Day takes on fundamental importance and focuses on the role that each person can play in promoting peace.
Everyone can contribute to building peace, and there are many ways to do so, from simple debates on non-violence and disarmament to volunteering, but above all through everyday choices.
To build peace, it is essential to understand the causes of conflict.
The goal of achieving peace is closely linked to respect for human rights and the protection of the environment.
The role of the United Nations in peacebuilding is fundamental, and to this end, it has established the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission and the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.
Through its Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations works to eliminate all factors that can lead to violence, such as discrimination, injustice and inequality.
With regard to the Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations has also launched the “ActNow” campaign to encourage more and more people to take action to achieve a peaceful world.
This programme calls on everyone to take action, because we can all make a difference, starting with dialogue.
Here are some things each of us can do to promote peace:
- Speak up for peace: we need to use our voices to spread awareness about issues related to peace.
- Educate yourself about peace: issues related to conflict are diverse and interconnected.
- Say no to violence: in any situation of conflict, we must seek dialogue while respecting others.
- Practice understanding and solidarity: we have more things in common than differences, so we need to engage with each other to understand different points of view.
- Report bullying and harassment: today more than ever, these incidents are on the rise due to the spread of social media. No one should be a victim of bullying or harassment, so it is important to report these incidents.
- Protest inequality and discrimination: conflicts often arise due to social marginalisation or discrimination.
- Embrace inclusion and diversity: it is important to be open to what you consider different.
- Support peace advocates: there are many people who are committed to peace. Find out about them and learn about their work.
- Follow reliable news sources: fake news is on the rise, so it is necessary to be careful.
- Post with care on social media: before interacting on social media, it is advisable to think carefully.
