The Agency was established in 2021 by Regulation (EU) 2021/2303 of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to replace the European Asylum Support Office (EASO).

The Agency's task is to improve the functioning of the Common European Asylum System by providing technical and operational assistance to Member States and ensuring greater consistency in the assessment of applications for international protection.
