The importance of Wetlands

The extent of South Africa's reliance on coal is clear to see. In the province of Mpumalanga the landscape is scarred with huge coal-fired power stations and vast open-cast mines, the surface of the countryside literally having been scraped away. The coal-mining process here can leave water supplies unusable for irrigation, for industry and for consumption by animals and humans.

Climate Justice 1 - Leaving Fossil Fuels in the Ground

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) destroyed weapons and ammunition recovered from civilians seeking refuge in the UNMISS base in Malakal, Upper Nile State. Some 134 weapons and 10,500 rounds of ammunition were disposed of in the exercise. A majority (108) of the confiscated weapons were AK 47/56 rifles.
