International Migrants Day: 18 December

Today, more people than ever live in a country other than the one in which they were born. While many individuals migrate voluntarily, other movements are the result of climate disasters, economic challenges, extreme poverty and conflict.

2020 saw a peak of 281 million people on the move as international migrants.

This international day was proclaimed by Resolution 55/93 adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations as an occasion to raise awareness in public on issues of concern, mobilise political will and resources to address global problems, and celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity.

The 2021 theme is "Harnessing the Potential of Human Mobility" and focuses on the impact that migrants have, or could have, by analysing how the global overview can be shaped through impactful decisions to address the challenges and opportunities presented by international mobility and people on the move.
