Signature of the memorandum between Guangzhou University Institute for Human Rights and the PhD programme Human Rights, Society and Multi-level Governance

On 27 May 2016, the Coordinator of the Joint Ph.D Programme, Giuseppe Giordan, and the Executive Director of Guangzhou University Institute for Human Rights, Songcai Yang, signed a Memorandum of cooperation that envisages both joint research and common training activities.

Professor Giordan, a member of the University of Padova’s delegation led by the Rector, professor Rosario Rizzuto, visited the Institute for Human Rights on May 26th and 27th. He met the 13 researchers working in the Centre together with the Institute’s founder and Dean professor Buyun Li, and the Institute’s Director professor Songcai Yang. Furthermore, the Faculty of Law’s Deputy Dean professor Jiang Yinhua and the Faculty of Public Administration’s representative professor Xie Jungui attended the 26 May meeting in view of future didactic collaborations.

The Guangzhou University Institute for Human Rights was founded in 2004 and is the most prestigious research and training centre on human rights currently established in China. The two leading lecturers, professor Li and professor Yang, are the authors of the first and most widespread human rights textbook in China.

In the framework of the Memorandum, which is part of a broader cooperation project between the two Universities, the University of Guangzhou provides two scholarship grants for students from that university who aim to enroll in the International PhD Programme in Human Rights, Society and Multi-level Governance (for the A.Y. 2017/2018). The Memorandum envisages also exchanges for the student of the Padova’s MA programme in Human Rights and Multi-level Governance, as well as the activation of a specific path for Guangzhou University’s students within the Bachelor degree in Political Science, International Relations, Human Rights.

The next official step, as already anticipated in the talks held in China at the end of May, will be the signature of a memorandum of collaboration between the Guangzhou University Institute for Human Rights and the Human Rights Centre of the University of Padova, which might be finalised by the end of 2016.
