University of Padova International Conference Keynote Speaker: UN Special Rapporteur on the promotions and protection of rights in the context of climate change

Mr. Ian Fry was appointed Special Rapporteur on the promotions and protection of rights in the context of climate change by the HUman Rights Council in March 2022. The Mandate of the SR consists in studying and identifying how adverse effects of climate change affects the enjoyment of human rights, identifying the existing challenges in State’s efforts to promote and protect human rights while addressing adverse climate change effects and more.

Mr. Fry is an International Environmental Law and Policy Expert. His focus has been on mitigation policies and loss-damage associated with the Paris Agreement, Kyoto Protocol and related instruments.
Originally from Tuvalu, an island country in te polynesian subregion of Oceania in the Pacific, Mr. Fry served 21 years as part of the Government and was appointed Ambassador for Climate CHange and Environment from 2015-2019. As a representative of Tuvalus’ Government he participated in numerous international summits and fora such as: World Summit on Sustainable Development, Commission for Sustainable Development, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, just to mention a few.

The SR  is also a professor at the Fenner School of Environment and Society of the Australian National University and specializes in International Environmental Policy and Environmental Law.

Mr. Ian Fry will take part in the Opening Plenary Session in the International Conference organized by the Human Rights Centre “The Consequences of War and their Interdependence: Bringing Human Security Back to the Political Agenda” that will take place on the 14th and 15th of November 2022 at the University of Padova.
