© Council of Europe

The Department for the Execution of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (Execution Department) has published an updated thematic factsheet on the execution of ECHR judgments concerning freedom of religion.

The European Court has underlined that the freedom of religion is one of the foundations of a democratic society. The factsheet presents numerous examples of measures that have been adopted and reported by the States in the context of the execution of the European Court's judgments, in order to safeguard and protect freedom of religion. The factsheet discusses the following matters: recognition and organisation of religious communities; conscientious objection; religious discrimination; freedom of religion in courts and education; freedom of religion in civil law matters and of persons in detention.

Previous thematic factsheets covered issues such as: domestic violence, freedom of assembly and association, freedom of expression, migration and asylum, LGBTI persons’ rights, environment, effective investigations, constitutional matters, independence and impartiality, children’s rights, Roma and Travellers or conditions of detention. The main goal of thematic factsheets is to bring attention to possible changes to national law and European practice in particular areas based on the implementation of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.

The full text of the factsheet is available here.
