EU priorities for the 80th UN General Assembly

On 23 June 2025, the Council of the European Union endorsed conclusions regarding the priorities of the European Union to be presented at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The commitment to peace and security, respect for human rights and sustainable development was reaffirmed. In this time of global instability, the EU is committed to ensuring a just and lasting peace worldwide.
The EU supports a multilateral system based on international law and the universality of human rights and will therefore continue to uphold the principles of the UN Charter. It will also push states to adhere to the entire human rights protection system.
Climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity are challenges that the EU cannot delay in addressing. In this sense, the EU promises together with its partners to accelerate the green transition by firmly supporting the Paris Agreement. The reference to sustainable development is also important, as the EU is committed to the full achievement of the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
The EU also supports the UN reform agenda pursued by the Secretary-General through the “UN80 initiative” and thus the reform of the Security Council, peacekeeping forces and the humanitarian system.
