The European Commission has launched a report on the progress on the implementation of the LGBTIQ rights in Europe. According to Helena Dalli, the EU Commissioner for Equality, the document is part of the common efforts “to see a European Union where sexual and gender diversity is celebrated as part of our collective richness”, as a response to the increase on LGBTIQ hate crimes in almost every Member State since 2021.

The report studies a timeframe of five years, from 2020 to 2025, and collected information from Member States and members of Civil Society Organizations. It contains four pillars: tackling discrimination against LGBTIQ people; ensuring LGBTIQ people’s safety; building LGBTIQ inclusive societies; and leading the call for LGBTIQ equality around the world.

The main goals are to analyse the progress made so far on the subject, and to underline the challenges that need to be tackled and the actions that must be taken to safeguard an European environment of inclusion and equality. The initiative is part of the 2020-2025 LGBTIQ equality strategy, whose main goal is to mainstream equality into all EU policies and programs by creating platforms for discussion of the subject with Member States.
