Global Campus of Human Rights: MOOC on Women at the forefront of Democratic Change
Due to the structural injustices women face, they are often viewed and represented just as victims, and rarely as protagonists and crucial actors in the fight to build and protect democracy. This happens also because the attention is drawn especially towards male leaders, thinkers and strategists, whom are attributed all the merits and results of the pro-democracy and decolonization movements.
These narratives do not reflect reality. In fact, women have always taken part in the struggles against authoritarian regimes and fought next to the men for the democratization of institutions. Unfortunately, their efforts did not always result in improvement in terms of women's rights, but they had a huge impact on the movements. The evidence shows that the democratic transitions are more likely to succeed and the quality of democracy tends to be much better when women are engaged.
What is missing though is a systematic study on the impact women had in the pro-democracy movements. The MOOC on Women at the forefront of Democratic Change aims to bring up this issue and explore the interconnection between gender, equality and democracy. The course is promoted by the Global Campus of Human Rights and will take place from 4th of November to 2nd of December 2024. It is possible to enroll freely until 18 November.
