Global network on national human rights action planning: webinar on "NMIRFs and Social Participation: Strengthening Human Rights Implementation at the National Level", 8 April 2026
On April 8, 2026 the Global Network on National Human Rights Action Planning has organized the online event “NMIRFs and Social Participation: Strengthening Human Rights Implementation at the National Level” from 3 to 4 pm CEST with the speaker Fernanda Lapa (executive director of the Institute for Development and Human Rights (IDDH), coordination of the UPR Brazil and Latin America Coalitions, board member of the UPR Info and chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Citizenship Education and Human Rights (Univille/Brasil)).
The aim of this event is to strengthen social participation in the monitoring and implementation of human rights obligations through National Mechanisms for Implementation, Reporting and Follow-up (NMIRFs).
The event will focus on the possible instruments and procedures for dialogue with civil society and reinforce suggestions on how they can be improved to enable greater social control and participation.
This event celebrates the ten year anniversary of when the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) published the first guidance document defining National Mechanism for Implementation, Reporting and Follow-up (NMIRFs), and the key capacities for their effectiveness. At the time it was already being said that these mechanisms should be inclusive and open to the engagement of civil society, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), and other actors, such as parliaments, statistical institutes, and academia. To this regard, civil society can and wants to actively contribute to the creation and implementation of proposals, projects, and public policies aimed at complying with international decisions and recommendations that have an impact on the protection of human rights in the territories.
