The Spirit Level: Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better

The Divide tells the story of 7 individuals striving for a better life in the modern day US and UK - where the top 0.1% owns as much wealth as the bottom 90%. By plotting these tales together, we uncover how virtually every aspect of our lives is controlled by one factor: the size of the gap between rich and poor. This isn’t based on real life. This is real life.

The University Human Rights Centre will host a viewing of the film “The Divide”, inspired by the international bestseller “The Spirit Level - Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better”. The acclaimed authors Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett will introduce the evening by briefly discussing the question “How to reduce income inequality and promote well-being within societies” - the main theme of “The Divide”.

Richard Wilkinson is a social epidemiologist and advocate. He is Professor Emeritus of Social epidemiology at the University of Nottingham. He is also Honorary Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London and Senior Lecturer at the University of York.

Kate Pickett is Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York and was a National Institute for Health Research Career Scientist from 2007-2012.
