Italy hosts the United Nations Conference on peaceful, just and inclusive societies
It is underway until May 29th at the Farnesina the United Nations Conference “Peaceful, Just and inclusive Societies: SDG16 implementation and the path towards leaving no one behind” concerning the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 - “Peace, Justice and Institutions” of the Agenda 2030. The event is co-organised by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) together with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).
Approximately 250 delegates from UN Member Countries, International Organizations and civil society organizations attend the Conference.
The Conference represents the main forum of debate and principal contribution ahead of the overall review of the SDG 16 which is to be held at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development scheduled to take place in New York next July.
The main themes will be discussed in the high-level plenary sessions but also in sessions on the connection between peace and development; access to justice and the rule of law; building solid institutions; situations of crisis and conflict; the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms; the fight against corruption, organized crime and illegal financial flows; inclusive, transparent and informed access to institutions; data to monitor the SDG 16.
At the close of the Conference, the organizers will draft a report to be used as a formal input at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development next July, which will include, among others, the review of the SDG 16.
