Survival International: two bills currently under discussion in the Peruvian Congress could mark the end of the country's uncontacted indigenous peoples

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

Survival International has launched a petition to "stop the Extermination Campaign in Peru".
Two bills are currently under discussion in the Peruvian Congress which, if passed, could mark the end of the country's uncontacted indigenous peoples, including the Mashco Piro people, the biggest uncontacted indigenous peoples known today.
The two bills, promoted by far-right politicians allied with powerful mining, oil and gas companies, could lead to what Peruvian indigenous organizations describe as "an extermination campaign".

Specifically, the first bill proposes opening all of Peru's protected areas to mining and oil and gas exploration. Many of these territories are home to uncontacted indigenous peoples, whose existence is now under threat due to the destruction of their native forests.

The second bill would open a vast area of the Peruvian Amazon — also home to a large number of uncontacted indigenous peoples — to gas extraction projects.
