The fate of Palestinians in Israeli detention since October 7, 2023
It is imperative for Israel to end all practices of torture and other ill-treatment of Palestinians held in any place of detention, protecting and ensuring their right to life.
According to the United Nation Human Rights office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, at least 75 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention between 7 October 2023 and 31 August 2025. Among these people there were individuals with health conditions requiring medical attention prior to their arrest and the United Nations Human Rights Council documented evidences of torture and ill-treatment on the bodies of Palestinian people carried out while they were still alive. Also, proofs of rape, other sexual and gender-based violence, starvation and sufficient hygiene conditions have been recorded.
While these people continue to suffer inhumane abuses, Israeli authorities have publicly refused to comply with the 7 September Israeli High Court of Justice decision, ordering the State to meet the basic nutritional standards for Palestinian prisoners.
In addition, Israeli authorities have released information about another 19 deaths of detainees without sufficient elements to verify their identity and at least 5 Palestinians have died due to the incapacity to ensure proper medical assistance.
These acts all fit in the category of serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human right law, amounting to war crimes and, in certain circumstances, to crime against humanity.
