UN Secretary-General Acknowledges PKK’s Declaration to Cease Armed Activities

On 13 May 2025, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his approval of the announcement that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey intends to dissolve and disarm.

At the United Nations’ regular press briefing held on Monday, Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated, “The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement regarding the PKK’s decision to dissolve and disarm. If implemented, this decision would constitute a significant step toward the peaceful resolution of a protracted conflict.”

Mr. Dujarric further clarified that, despite reports in Turkish media suggesting the disarmament would occur under the auspices of the United Nations, this was not accurate based on information verified with the UN Mission in Iraq. He added, “The United Nations remains ready to assist and support any initiative aimed at fostering peace. However, our engagement must be constructive, and we do not intend to impose our involvement where it may not be required or beneficial.”

In response to additional questions, the Spokesperson confirmed that, as of Monday morning, the Secretary-General had not held direct discussions with either Turkish or Kurdish representatives. He emphasized that any peace process must be inclusive and endorsed by all relevant parties, both at the national and local levels. “We welcome the declaration. The focus now is to determine how the United Nations and the broader international community can constructively support the process,” he concluded.
