UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing: call for contributions on land and the right to housing opened, deadline May 25 2025

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has launched a "Call for input" on the theme "Land and the right to adequate housing". This initiative, promoted by the Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Mr. Balakrishnan Rajagopal, aims to gather information and testimonies from around the world for a report to be presented to the United Nations General Assembly in October 2025. The goal is to explore the importance of access to land for the realization of the right to adequate housing, both in rural and urban contexts.
The call invites governments, civil society organizations, academics, and individuals to send contributions sharing their experiences and knowledge on various aspects related to land and housing. Key questions concern land tenure systems, distribution of land ownership and use rights, challenges in accessing land for housing purposes, recognition of collective property rights, and land management policies that have had a positive impact on the right to housing.
To participate, interested parties can send their contributions via email to hrc-sr-housing@un.org (cc: ohchr-registry@un.org) by May 25, 2025. Contributions should not exceed 2500 words and can be submitted in English, French, or Spanish. It’s important to note that, unless otherwise indicated, contributions will be published on the Special Rapporteur’s website.
This is a unique opportunity to influence the global debate on the right to housing and land management.
