United Nations: a new initiative to enhance its efficiency and impact

The United Nations has introduced a new initiative aimed at improving its effectiveness and responsiveness to global challenges. This plan takes the name of “UN80 Initiative”, and was presented to Member States on Tuesday 24 of June, outlining strategies to improve operations, review mandates, and realign structures across the UN system.
Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General for Policy and chair of the Task Force overseeing the plan, emphasised that the initiative is not merely about downsizing, but rather about strengthening and improving the UN’s operations. The reform agenda aims to address pressing issues such as conflict, displacement, and climate change, while also handling external tensions like budget constraints and political disunion.
The initiative comprises three main workstreams: enhancing efficiencies, reviewing mandate implementation, and restructuring programs across the UN system. Proposals include solidifying support services, bringing payroll operations under central control, and potentially reducing the 2026 budget by 15-20% and workforce by 20% with a focus on preserving entry-level positions. These measures are intended to optimise resource allocation and increase the UN’s impact on the people it serves.
While some Member States expressed concerns about the proposed budget cuts and staff reductions, the UN leadership emphasised the need for transparency and inclusivity throughout the reform process. As the organisation celebrated its 80th anniversary, on June 26, the UN80 Initiative represents a significant effort to ensure the United Nations remains appropriate and ready to face future challenges in a changing global landscape.
