Unitet Nations: cautious optimism on the Peace agreement in Yemen

Hans Grundberg, UN Special Envoy, has briefed ambassadors from the internationally-recognized government of Yemen, representatives of the Houthi rebels from the opposition, as well as international and regional actors to discuss the progress of a peace agreement in the country. Although there is still work to be done, Grundberg has confirmed that, overall, all parties involved have demonstrated the intention of designing a permanent ceasefire “on humanitarian and economic measures.

The hostility levels in the country have dropped considerably since the positive effects of the April 2022 truce on the Yemeni economy. Moreover, hundreds of conflict-related detainees are being released by the dominant parties, as a demonstration of the efforts from both sides towards peace. However, episodes of violence, gender discrimination and the humanitarian crisis faced by the Yemeni are still important stalemates for the full resolution of the conflict. Nevertheless, the UN Special Envoy remains confident about a brighter future in the country through the development of a peace agreement “and the resumption of a Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices”.
