The Human Rights Centre of the University of Padova has launched the new Universal Civil Service project and is selecting 4 young people aged between 18 and 28. The call is open also to all foreign citizens in possession of a regular residence permit at the moment of applying. A minimun knowledge of Italian is required.

The project focuses on information, education and training in the field of human rights, in particular, on the topic of Human Rights Defenders, i.e. those women and men who act peacefully and non-violently for the promotion and protection of these rights, oppose dictatorships and oppressive regimes, fight for freedom of expression, fight against discrimination and injustice, document human rights abuses and defend the environment. One of the primary activities of the project is to favour the establishment of a local hub of the "Shelter Cities" pilot project in collaboration with the network “In difesa di…”.

The project also pursues the objective of developing interaction with the broad community of users and communication networks that make use of the scientific, editorial and multimedia contents published through the website and the social media channels on the themes of the culture of peace and human rights.

Volunteers will be involved in numerous activities such as:

  • drafting and publication of contents on the specific theme "Human Rights Defenders" and more generally on human rights and the culture of peace, in Italian and English;
  • management of social media, communication strategies, multimedia (photos, interviews, audios, etc.)
  • updating and development of databases and resources on human rights and culture of peace;
  • organization and management of events, international conferences and other cultural initiatives promoted by the Centre.

The project is part of the 2019 call published by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Department of Youth and Universal Civil Service for the selection of a total of 39.646 young people for projects in Italy and abroad.

The University of Padova offers 10 projects for volunteers to apply to.
