United Nations agencies have officially confirmed the presence of famine conditions in parts of Gaza. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis released on 22 August 2025, over half a million people in Gaza are facing severe food insecurity.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have emphasised the importance of swift action to reach those in need with aid and food, with the ultimate goal of ending the population's food insecurity. The famine, currently present in Gaza Governorate, is expected to spread to the Governorates of Deir Al Balah and Khan Younis in the coming weeks, potentially reaching catastrophic levels of food insecurity by the end of September.

The primary causes of this crisisinclude nearly two years of conflict, repeated displacements, and severe restrictions on humanitarian access. The report highlights the collapse of health, sanitation, and market systems, as well as the widespread destruction of arable land, livestock, and food production systems. The UN agencies are calling for an immediate ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access to prevent further deaths due to hunger and malnutrition.
