World Migration Report 2022
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been producing world migration reports since 2000. Due to the complex nature of global migration, it is difficult to understand and regulate the dynamics of migration. The IOM’s migration reports aim to offer a complete picture of this complicated and current issue.
The World Migration Report 2022, the eleventh in the world migration report series, aims to contribute to an increased understanding of migration throughout the world. The current global estimate is that there have been around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020, equating to 3.6 % of the global population, three times higher than the estimated migrants in 1970.
Looking at the numbers for international remittances, which are financial or other kinds of transfers made directly by migrants to their families or communities, there has been an overall increase in remittances in recent decades, from $126 billion in 2000 to $702 billion in
2020. With the Covid-19 pandemic, there was also a dramatic decline in human mobility globally. Governments around the world implemented various measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus. While preventive measures within states have been eased over time, many countries still had restrictions on international mobility in place.
By analysing the data, it is possible to observe that the number of international migrants increased in all regions of the United Nations, concentrating in Europe and Asia, which hosted approximately 87 and 86 million international migrants respectively, accounting for 61% of global international migration. Long-term data shows that international migration is not uniform across the globe, but is shaped by economic, geographic, demographic, and other factors that result in distinct migration patterns, such as migration “corridors.”
Due to their complex and changing nature, it is difficult to frame and regulate the dynamics of migration. Documents such as the World Migration Report 2022 aim to offer a complete picture of this important and current issue.
