OSCE Representative on freedom of the media

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media was established in December 1997 with the aim of ensuring a high level of compliance with the norms and standards on freedom of expression and media freedom accepted by the OSCE State parties. They serve as an instrument of prevention in cases of violation of freedom of expression by paying particular attention to any obstacles or hindrances to the work of journalists.

In order to fulfil this task, the Representative monitors and collects information on an ongoing basis on the state of the media in OSCE Countries and may also conduct visits to OSCE member states. The Representative also receives communications on alleged serious cases of irregularities and use of the media in violation of these principles.
