On 15 June 2022, the Council of Ministers approved the analytical report concerning international missions carried out between 1 January and 31 December 2021 (Doc. XXVI, No. 5), and simultaneously authorised the continuation of these missions into 2022, pursuant to Article 3 of Law No. 145 of 21 July 2016. It also authorised Italy’s participation in three new international missions under Article 2, paragraph 1, of the same law (Doc. XXV, No. 5). These include the bilateral support mission to the Armed Forces of Qatar on the occasion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the EU military training mission in Mozambique known as EUTM Mozambique, and the strengthening of NATO’s presence in the south-eastern area of the Alliance.

Both Council of Ministers’ resolutions were subsequently approved on 27 July 2022 by the Senate Committees III (Foreign Affairs and Emigration) and IV (Defence) (Doc. XXIV No. 66 and Doc. XXIV No. 67).

The average annual strength of Italian contingents deployed in operational theatres in 2022 was 5,978 personnel, representing a reduction of 483 units compared to 2021. A total of €1,171,307,698 was allocated for the extension of ongoing missions, and €51,623,377 for participation in new missions.
