29 September 2021: International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Registration open!
On 29 September 2021, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste will be observed for the second time. Reducing food loss and waste is essential to achieve multiple goals, such as improving agri-food systems, achieving food security and food safety, improving food quality and delivering on nutritional outcomes, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pressure on land and water resources.
With less than nine years left to reach SDG goal 12, target 12.3 – by 2030 halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses – the second observance will highlight the urgent need to accelerate collective action to reduce food loss and waste. Public actors (national or local authorities), private actors (businesses, including producers) and individuals need to be all involved.
Heads of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), together with representatives from the European Commission and from Italy, will share their perspectives on progress achieved in addressing food loss and food waste and on actions required to stem the problem. A keynote presentation of a high-level panel will seek to provoke further thought on the issues. Finally, a roundtable panel will discuss scalable innovations to accelerate the pace of food loss and waste reduction globally, toward delivering on better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life.
