Human Rights Watch: published the World Report 2025 on human rights situation globally

Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international non-governmental organization dedicated to protecting human rights, has published its World Report 2025 that offers a complete overview of human rights conditions in more than 100 countries in 2024, analyzing key trends, challenges, and developments from the previous year.

HRW highlights some very important themes in the human rights field during the year 2024: undemocratic elections, resistance, and conflicts continue to challenge the strength of democratic institutions and the foundations of international human rights and humanitarian law.
According to the Human Rights Watch Report, governments worldwide must uphold their commitments to human rights, democracy, and humanitarian principles to respond to various global disruptions, from intensified repression in Russia, India, and Venezuela to devastating armed conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine.
However many governments have failed to meet expectations and even those governments that express their support and are active in addressing these issues have often applied human rights standards inconsistently or inadequately, reinforcing global doubts about the legitimacy of these principles.

Elections, Repression and Resistance
The report highlights the troubling trend of electoral manipulation and the practice of racism, hate and discrimination that surrounded many election processes last year.
Furthermore, authoritarian leaders tighten up their grip on power: particularly in China, where the government continued its repression on dissent, silencing political opposition and restricting freedoms. However, there was a positive example from India, where voters rejected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s divisive rhetoric, demonstrating the power of democratic processes to check authoritarian tendencies.

Conflicts and Humanitarian Crises
HRW underscores the devastating impact of ongoing conflicts, including the war in Gaza, where indiscriminate violence against civilians has led to widespread suffering and loss of life and Sudan violent conflicts between armed factions that has displaced millions and exacerbated ethnic cleansing.

Civil Resistance and Accountability
Despite the challenges, the report also highlights global movements for change, including protests in Bangladesh and South Korea, where people successfully challenged the government repression and restored democratic norms.
