On the occasion of 5 May, Independent Living Day, attention is once again drawn to the importance of autonomy and self-determination for persons with disabilities, which are essential elements for the full realisation of human rights.

The European Independent Living Day, promoted by the European Network on Independent Living, was established to raise awareness about the right of persons with disabilities to live independently and be included in the community. Celebrated annually on 5 May, the Day aims to highlight the barriers that still limit independent living and to promote policies aligned with Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which recognises the right to live independently and make choices about one’s own life.

In this context, the project “Independent Living University”, implemented in Potenza by the Italian Association of Persons with Down Syndrome, represents a significant example of good practice in promoting concrete pathways towards inclusion and independent living.

The initiative involved 28 persons with disabilities, particularly individuals with Down syndrome and autism spectrum conditions, offering them the opportunity to develop skills for adult life through a structured and autonomy-oriented experience.

The project was developed through a social co-housing experience, where participants engaged in real-life daily activities, including household management, organisation of routines and interpersonal relationships. With the support of professionals and partner organisations, thanks to this project, participants strengthened both practical and social skills, enhancing their capacity for self-determination. This approach reflects a rights-based perspective, recognising persons with disabilities as active agents in shaping their own lives.

The experience in Potenza demonstrates how inclusive and well-supported environments can foster the development of skills necessary for independent living, helping to overcome persistent social and cultural barriers.

Supported by public institutions, the project highlights the importance of investing in structured and continuous pathways capable of producing long-term results. Independent Living Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of policies and initiatives that make the right to independent living effective in practice. In this regard, the “Independent Living University” stands out as a good practice capable of informing future policy developments.
